Title:  An Exploration of the Principle of Emerging Interactions in Spatiotemporal Diversity: Mathematical Models for Functional Differentiation

Abstract: In these six years, we carried out a CREST (Core Research for Evolutionary Science and Technology) project entitled “An exploration of the principle of emerging interactions in spatiotemporal diversity”. In the present seminar, first I show the aim of such a research, research questions and mathematical framework of the research. Among many outstanding research results, here I would like to restrict myself to the mathematical research and its direct applications. As we were interested in nonstationary processes of the brain, that is, functional differentiation and functional parcellation, we needed a new framework of self-organization, that is a theory of self-organization with constraints. This theory is realized by a certain variational principle. Second, I explain mathematical models, which represent an essence of the theory. Finally, I would like to discuss about the question: what could make machine learning be possible?
