 "Disorder Engineering: Nature's Way"

Nitin Upadhyaya (Flame University)

While the word Engineering literally means ingenuity or cleverness, we tend to associate the word with something done ``precisely'' or with complete control of the parts to achieve complete control of the outcome. In this talk, we will try to broaden this notion by citing a specific example from nature to see how certain species of fish seem to use disorder to achieve their milky white/silver coloration (i.e., broad-band reflection) and how, the theory of wave localization could be used to quantitatively understand the main aspects of this phenomenon. Further, we will discuss how our learnings could also be applied for the inverse problem, i.e., for the design of narrow-band frequency filters (mechanical or electromagnetic) that only allow harmonics of a certain frequency to be transmitted.
