Okinawa's wealth has historicaly come from the rich oceans surrounding the Ryukuyu archipelago. During the relatively short time researchers from OIST spend in Okinawa we are greated by accomodating people with a rich ocean culture. As an international group of researchers we would like to share our desire for understanding with Okinawans. By demonstrating our methods and findings we hope to inspire a healthy curiosity toward Okinawa's coastal ocean and beyond.
As scientist we are use to presenting our work at a level of technical detail that is not particularly interesting to the general public. UMI hopes to present marine science being carried out at OIST in a more approachable and fun way. By organising hands-on activities in OIST and around Okinawa, we will better convey our excitement and concern for the marine environment to local people.
