Colloquium: "Basics of differential geometry and General Relativity" by Mr. Ryusei Maeda

Date

Friday, February 7, 2020 - 10:00 to 12:00

Location

B714b

Description

Speaker: Mr. Ryusei Maeda is a 3rd year undergratuate student at University of Tokyo and is currently visiting OIST as a research intern.

Abstract: Einstein’s general relativity which describes large scale gravitational dynamics can be understood from geometrical viewpoints. In this presentation, we first develop essential concepts of geometries such as manifolds, (co)tangent spaces, tensors and metrics. The latter half is devoted to the basics of general relativity. We introduce the Christoffel symbols, covariant derivatives and curvatures. We also derive the Einstein equations from the Einstein-Hilbert action.
