Title: Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Perovskite Solar Cell Research

Abstract: Solar cell or photovoltaic (PV) cell is a semiconductor device that converts solar energy into electricity. PV technology is often mentioned as a solution to issues related to increase in global electricity demands and global warming. However, globally installed PV capacity is still relatively low and the total generated electricity from PVs constitutes to only ~1% of worldwide electricity demands. As summarized in the “Best Research-Cell Efficiencies” chart from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) [1], a myriad of PV materials and technologies were developed in the last few decades with the aim to fabricate solar cells with low cost, high solar energy-to-electricity power conversion efficiency (PCE), long-term lifetime, and environmental friendliness. At OIST, since 2013, a team of researchers in the Energy Materials and Surface Sciences Unit led by Prof. Yabing Qi have been making concerted efforts to develop perovskite solar cells aiming commercialization [2]. In this talk, the existing different PV technologies and the comparison to an emerging PV material called organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites will be discussed.

After the seminar (17:00-17:30), join us for discussion with free pizza and soft drinks!
