Birdwatching Walk Event Information

Have you ever wondered about the birds you see every day here at OIST? On an average day you can see around 10 different species of birds on our campus, and throughout the year another 20+ will stop by on migration. Ornithologist Nick Friedman can help you identify the birds at OIST by their appearance, sounds, and behavior.

We will start at the OIST pond in front of the tunnel and learn about the species living there, then move toward the Lab 4 construction to learn about forest birds, circling around the campus to eventually return to the tunnel area. Participants will receive information to take home with them about common Okinawan birds (information is in English, with bird names in English and in Japanese).

• Please bring binoculars and sturdy shoes for walking.
• This event is suitable for adults and children elementary-school age and older.
• Please don’t bring dogs or other animals, as they scare the birds.
• In case of rain, the event will be postponed.
