Plant synthetic biology: engineering green organisms for a sustainable future

Abstract

Synthetic biology is a fast-growing interdisciplinary field at the interface of biology and engineering, with much-anticipated potential to drive the next industrial revolution through biomanufacturing. While plants and other green (photosynthetic) organisms are the go-to bio-factories for our food, drugs, and materials, synthetic biological bioproduction has left them largely untapped until recently. We are now seeing a rapid increase in global interest and progress in plant synthetic biology. This 2 and 1/2-day conference will feature leading researchers from Japan and the rest of the world (especially the UK and USA), with the aim of establishing a global plant synthetic biology consortium to energize and spearhead the research and innovation in the growing field.
