OIST NetCafé Online Information Session in August 2025 (EN)

The session will start with OIST general introduction, PhD and Research Internship admission process, financial support and student life. This time, we have invited two current OIST PhD students, who will give you insights into the study and research environment at OIST from different stages of their PhD studies.

Yijin Lee (PhD student at the Marine Climate Change Unit)

Nice to meet you all! I'm Jin, from South Korea. I have always been fascinated by subtropical and tropical ecosystems like mangrove forests and coral reefs, but these habitats are not common in Korea. So, after my undergraduate studies at Pusan National University, I moved to Japan. I completed my Master’s at the University of Tokyo, where I researched mudskippers in Tokyo Bay. I decided to join OIST because of its English-friendly environment and strong subtropical marine research labs. Now, starting my third year as a Ph.D. student in the Marine Climate Change Unit, I’m studying the effects of marine heatwaves on anemonefish and also working on fish diversity in coral restoration sites with the Marine Genomics Unit. Outside of work, I enjoy ultimate frisbee, diving, snorkeling, and exploring local craft beer spots.

Erika Fukuhara (PhD student at the Protein Engineering and Evolution Unit)

I was born in Okinawa and spent my formative years abroad, living in both Germany and the United States. I earned my BSc from the University of Georgia in the US and began my doctoral studies at OIST in September 2021. Following enrollment, I joined the Protein Engineering and Evolution Unit (PI: Associate Professor Paola Laurino), where I work towards unveiling the biophysical and biochemical principles that govern the assembly of multienzyme complexes. Outside of the lab, I enjoy unwinding with K-dramas, exploring cozy cafes with delicious desserts, and traveling both within Japan and abroad.
