Speakers

Miyu Nanbu (OIST PhD Student - Year of 2021)

I am from Tokyo, and in December 2019, I obtained a Neuroscience BSc from the University of Leeds in the UK. After returning to Japan, I worked temporarily as a cram school tutor and in other jobs. Later, with the goal of pursuing a career in research, I conducted a research internship at the Memory Research Unit at OIST starting from October 2020, under the supervision of Associate Professor Kazumasa Tanaka. Currently, I am affiliated with the same research unit, working towards unravelling the mechanisms of time information encoded in memory. Additionally, I live in a residence on the OIST campus with two roommates and a cat. Please feel free to ask me anything about my experience as a research intern or student life at OIST/Okinawa. I'm looking forward to having conversations with all of you.

Takatsugu Onishi (OIST PhD Student - Year of 2021)

I am from Osaka and obtained a bachelor's degree in March 2018 from Kochi University of Technology. After a while, I received a master's degree from Kyoto University in March 2021. Currently, I am engaged in research on novel properties at the interface of organic molecules and quantum materials in the Organic and Carbon Nanomaterials Unit (supervised by Assistant Professor Akimitsu Narita) and the Quantum Materials Science Unit (assisted by Assistant Professor Yoshinori Okada) at OIST. I also participated in the OIST Science Challenge 2019. I had the experience of both acceptance and rejection as I applied to OIST twice, once during my undergraduate years and once during my master's degree. While stories of acceptance are often shared, opportunities to discuss experiences of rejection are rare. Therefore, I would like to take this opportunity to share my experiences of rejection.
