ECO Club
ECO stands for Environmentally Conscious OISTers.
The ECO club will strive to make OIST a greener, healthier, more sustainable campus by disseminating environmental education, raising awareness, providing fun and interactive environmental programming, and working to decrease unnecessary single-use plastic waste.
As an international community of scientists, we believe OIST has an inherent responsibility to be an excellent environmental steward and a model for sustainable practices.
As guests on this beautiful island, we feel a mandate to protect and care for the land, seas, plants, animals, and even people - we should leave Okinawa (and the world) in better condition than we found it.
All members of the OIST community are welcomed to join ECO club. Together we can make OIST a better place to live, work, and play.
Projects and Initiatives:
- Raise Awareness: Demonstrate the magnitude of plastic waste produced on campus by collecting single-use plastic bags after lunchtime to create a public, community art project.
- Inform the Community: Host a viewing of the documentary A Plastic Ocean followed by a panel discussion and Q & A session focused on the effects of plastic pollution on the environment.
- Encourage Change: Make reusable bags available to OISTers at center court so that there is a convenient alternative to using plastic bags.
