Facilitator: Ara Tahmassian, Ph.D., Chief Research Compliance Officer at Harvard University; Director of BMENA Bioethics Forum.

Short Description:

Scientific research is based on the fundamental principles of trust in the quality and integrity of the research and its outcomes; conducting the research in an ethical and responsible manner; sharing of the data (e.g. by publication) in an honest and complete manner to allow for the results to be validated; and ensuring that the research is used for the common good of the society. This Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) webinar is an interactive session designed to acquaint researchers with the ethical and regulatory issues that arise in the context of responsible scientific research. The program will include a general overview of key issues and case-examples where research misconduct has impacted individual careers, scientific fields, and potentially public health and public trust.

Learning abjectives:

The webinar is designed to provide the participants with:

  • An understanding of the overall ethical and regulatory requirements.
  • Research misconduct and policies for handling misconduct.
  • Recognizing some potential indicators and potential preventive strategies.
  • Review and discussion of case-examples.

About the facilitator: 

Dr. Tahmassian is broadly responsible for oversight of the review, development, and implementation of policies related to research compliance activities across the university. Additionally, Dr. Tahmassian works to manage potential risks by integrating and coordinating the significant compliance and integrity requirements across the university. Prior to joining Harvard University, Dr. Tahmassian served as Associate Vice President for Research Compliance at Boston University and Boston Medical Center, and Associate Vice Chancellor for Research at University of California, San Francisco.

Dr. Tahmassian holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nuclear Engineering and a Ph.D. in Radiobiology from Queen Mary College- London University, and is a Diplomate of American Board of Sciences in Nuclear Medicine; and serves on a number of national and international committees and boards.
