Speakers
Nivedha Velmurugan (OIST PhD Student - Year of 2021)
I am Nivedha Velmurugan, a third-year Ph.D. student in the pi-conjugated polymers unit (Unit leader, Prof. Christine Luscombe). I received my Bachelor’s degree from Women’s Christian College, Chennai, India and Master’s degree from Stella Maris College, Chennai, India. During the course of my graduation, I worked as an intern at IIT Kanpur and IIT Indore, where I learned the fundamentals of organic synthesis. My current project focuses on the room-temperature C-H Arylation and ring closure reaction of benzofuran, and I am learning to explore and expand the horizons of C-H Activation reactions. Chennai is my hometown, and I have been to every nook around. As a bona fide South Indian, I love and cherish a good ghee-roasted Dosa with a bucket full of sambhar. You can find me engrossed in a book (always and ever, fiction) aside from the time I concuss my brain periodically with a regular dosage of NMR data.
Oscar Juez Neira(OIST PhD Student - Year of 2019)
Meet Oscar, a fourth-year Ph.D. student from Colombia with a passion for understanding how things age. Since joining the Plant Epigenetics Unit led by Professor Hidetoshi Saze in May 2021, he’s been exploring what plants can teach us about aging – a project that combines his curiosity about longevity with the fascinating culture of Okinawa. When he's not deep in research, Oscar loves soaking up the sun on the beach or spending time with his six guinea pigs. He's excited to share his journey and discoveries with you and can't wait to get to know everyone during the talk!
