Friday, November 4, 2022 - 11:00 to 12:00

Location

Seminar room C700, Lab 3 Level C

Description

On 4th November 2022 (Friday), the Innovators Society is hosting a Fireside chat with Dr. Solange Massa, the founder and CEO of Ecoatoms, a NASA supported company developing next generation biomaterials, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices in space.

Ecoatoms is developing ‘Ecos’ {habitats} or modules to create biological products in and for the toughest environments. Their team of medical doctors, chemists and aerospace engineers takes biological challenges and turns them into solutions. From novel biomaterials to medical devices, they leverage the space context to develop resilient and better performing bioproducts:

  • Biomaterials: They produce the next generation of polymers to address a specific biomedical need
  • Sensor Coatings: They develop novel coatings and surfaces for biosensing applications
  • Organs-on-a-chip: They develop award-winning organs-on-a-chip systems
  • Radiation Shielding: Their lead-free radiation shielding technology is available for medical and space applications
  • Tissue Engineering: They bioprint multi-tissue systems to address the complexity of three-dimensional drug testing platforms

Bio

Solange Massa MD PhD is the founder and CEO of Ecoatoms, a NASA supported company developing the next generation biomaterials, pharmaceuticals and medical devices in space. She was previously the Lead Investment Fellow for the Bio/Genomics Committee at Life Science Angels and currently a member at the same group. Before that, she was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Stanford University where spent two years developing biomaterials for radiation induced diseases. During her Ph.D. she developed award-winning vascular, liver and cardiac Organs-on-a-Chip for drug toxicity testing at Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology. For this work she was named MIT Innovator under 35 and Women at the Frontier. Her work also includes world-wide collaborations with EPFL, Politecnico di Milano, Universidad de los Andes and Universidad de Chile in 3D printing, tissue engineering, microfluidics, cell biology, neuroscience and nanotechnology. Her work has been featured in TEDx, MIT Technology Review, BBC, Wired and numerous scientific journals.
