For many OIST members with children, understanding the different schooling and childcare options available is a critical part of the relocation process. In this section, you will find information about schools available in Okinawa designed to aid you during your decision-making process. What types of schools are available for my children?

Public schools in your school district and private international schools are available.   

Does OIST have any programs for school age kids?

OIST provides an afterschool program and a holiday program for kid’s ages 5-12. In order to attend the afterschool program, the students are picked up from school by OIST transit and brought to OIST. The holiday program runs during elementary school holiday and vacation days.  Parents can bring their child to OIST on days when schools are closed and OIST is open.  Please contact Julia.nabholz@oist for more details.

What are the teachers’ qualification requirements in Japan?

To teach in a public school, teachers must obtain a university certificate before being hired by schools.  Each International school has their own qualification requirement, most require a degree in the field and a certification/ license.  Please contact the schools directly to obtain this information.
