Strong by Zumba

Maeva Techer - Sensei

Meava-san will get you back into shape in a very fun and energetic way. Do not confuse it with a dance Zumba class, and get ready for some push-ups, squats, burpees, lunges, jumps and more moves all sync with the music! All levels welcome (She will show low, normal and max out options and correct your posture). Maeva is an official certified STRONG by Zumba® instructor and SYNC Member since February 2019.

Kid's Ballet - With the Dance Club

Yuna-Hattori - Sensei

Yuna-san started ballet when she was four, and her childhood and early adolescence was devoted to ballet. She also entered Japanese ballet competitions, won several prizes such as the second place. Here at OIST, she has been teaching ballet to adults since June 2017. She always enjoys interacting with people through ballet and any form of dance, and she is very excited to hold kids ballet class.

Yuna-Sensei will be teaching begining ballet for children ages 4-8. The cost for the three classes are: 2100 JPY per student. Please register here to register your child for ballet classes. The children need comfortable clothes, a desire to learn, perhaps some ballet shoes (but not necessary).

Parents, please drop your children off with Yuna on Saturday to learn from the best! You can stay and watch from outside.

Flamenco Dance Class

Noriko Shimabukuro- Sensei


Noriko started dancing Flamenco for exercise, but soon progressed to value this art, especially after her experience performing with live music. With limited resources in Okinawa and her desire to learn more, she traveled to Seville, Spain to take lessons from top artists. Currently she helps run the curriculum of Escuela de Flamenco de Andalucia in Okinawa (lectures), and she performs in various events. Noriko says many Flamenco artists have told her that Okinawa is similar to Andalucia. She hopes to bring the passion and fun to OIST community as well.

Flamenco Dance (baile) is a highly-expressive, Spanish dance form. The flamenco is a solo dance characterized by hand clapping, percussive footwork, and intricate hand, arm, and body movements

Classes for 2020 schedule:

Starting Fridays from 7:00-8:15pm in the Village Center Meeting Room.

Please bring:

  • Comfortable clothes to dance
  • Flamenco skirt (or long wide skirt)*
  • Flamenco shoes (or heeled shoes, not too high)*
  • Water

*Don't worry if you don't have them, just come in and try it out!

Sanshin Classes

Satsuki Agena - Sensei

Satsuki was born in Okinawa City and started to study and perform sanshin at the age of 8. She joined Ryukyu Classical Music Preservation Nomura Style Association and started learning Ryukyuan traditional music at the age of 16. She won the Top Prize and certified in teaching the sanshin when she was a university student. After graduating university, she went to Canada for study abroad and recognized the beauty of Okinawan culture. Satsuki-san won the Grand Prize last August in the Performing Arts Contest in Sanshin area hosted by Okinawa Times. She is exploring the potential of sanshin to spread Okinawan culture using the sanshin that was handed down from her grandfather and aunt.

Her certification and awards include: Grand Prize in the Performing Arts Contest in Sanshin area hosted by Okinawa Times / Certified in teaching sanshin / Completed a Bachelor Degree at University of Calgary, Canada

Hatha Yoga Classes

Leilee Chojnacki - Sensei

Leilee has been a practitioner of ashtanga-based vinyasa yoga for the past 6 years and a RYT200 yoga teacher since 2017, and teaches vinyasa yoga. Leilee will be teaching Ashtanga-based Vinyasa Yoga to the community of OIST. Among the physical Hatha yoga practices, vinyasa yoga is the technique of coordinating motion of the body with the cycle of breath. This is a powerful relaxation and strength building technique which fosters the connection between the deep core and respiratory muscles and limbs. Her classes will focus on developing tristana, the threefold relation between breath, posture or movement, and attention to bring the body and the mind together into balance. Community Classes are Free!

Community Class Schedule

Wednesday 6:30pm- 8:00pm in the Ocean View Room

Level 1-2 yoga: Introductory vinyasa flow class, suitable for students with some athletic background, but no experience is needed.

Friday 5:30pm-6:30pm in the Ocean View Room

Beginner's Yoga: Slower-paced movement class. Suitable for complete beginners and experienced practitioners looking to refresh basic alignment.

Friday 6:45pm- 8:15pm in the Ocean View Room

Level 2-3 Vinyasa Yoga: 90 minute faster paced class, focus on development of strength and mobility. For students with background in yoga.

Tai Chi Class

Shima Yoshiki -Sensei has over 20 years training and over 7 years teaching experience around Okinawa.

This class will focus on releasing stress and work out your body, mind and spirit while having fun with Tai chi!

No registration, just wear comfortable clothes and bring water.

Schedule: Wednesdays 6:30 - 8:00 and Fridays 20:30 - 22:00

Price: 500y/class, first class free trial.

Each class is composed by two main parts:

1. Warm up and Qi Gong excersises.

2. Tai chi (and sometimes Kung Fu) practice.

Yoga Therapy

Miya Taillefer - Sensei

Miya-san is certified by the Japan Yoga Therapists Association & the Indian Central Government-accredited by Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samshana (S-VYASA). She is a certified yoga instructor (YIC) and yoga/therapist (YTIC). Miya can focus on areas for maternity, handicapped children, people with diseases, as well as regular courses.

Her classes will be taught in Japanese and little English. The Language exchange is welcomed!

Etsuko Araki - Sensei

Etsuko-san is a yoga therapist and is certified by the Indian government. She is also an instructor in Belly Dancing and Pilates. She will focus on the healthy living and breathing during her classes.

Her classes will be taught in Japanese only, but everyone is welcome.

Ashtanga Yoga

Prezemek Keppe - Sensei

Prezemek-san is a student and teacher of Ashtanga Yoga, devoted to the traditional teachings of this method. His goals are to teach Ashtanga Yoga in a traditional way. A dynamic and demanding practice of Asanas (positions), involving deep concentration and meditation. With emphasis on all the aspects of Yoga and how to apply them off the mat. With over 16 years of experience in and out of India, he would liek to share his philosophy on his personal practice of Yoga, Meditation and Pranayama.

Classes are in the Ocan View Room

Sayura Ishikawa -Sensei

Sayura-san is a RYT200 yoga teacher from Okinawa.  She practices Hatha Yoga and studied at the Vaikuntha Yoga studio at Naha city.  She will be on campus from 12:00-1:00pm every Friday to work with expecting mothers and all those that have had children already. These classes are open to all. There is an instruction fee of 800 JPY and no registration necessary.

Friday's 12:00-1:00pm in the Ocean View Room in the Village Center.

Kenyu Higa - Sensei

Kenyu-san was a former elementary school teacher for six years. He currently teaches physical education at a nursery school and classes in body movement at an action school. He has been an action double where and has appeared in action-related TV and stage shows.  He will be teaching gymnastics to children between the ages of 6-12 years old.


Sansu Club 算数クラブ  - Kid's after school math class

Ryo Ito - Sensei

Ryo-san will be teaching kid's math. This math is like a juku(塾) for kids ( 10-15 years old). The lessons will be on:

Mondays from 5:30-7:00pm in The Conference Center Meeting Room 1

Wednesdays from 5:30- 6:30pm in the Ocean View Room in theVillage Center

Fridays from 5:30-7:00pm in the Conference Center Meeting Room 1.

The cost for the class is monthy and will be 4,500 JPY. There is a limited registration of 10 -12 students, and it is first come first serves by registration.
