We are looking for start-up members for our newly created Machine Learning and Data Science Unit. We look forward to hearing from you soon!

Information about the MLDS unit at OIST:

  • We are part of OIST, Japan’s international and interdisciplinary research institution, which is very strong in natural science research. Therefore, you can conduct not only fundamental machine learning research but also research on the application of machine learning to the natural sciences (i.e., Machine Learning for Science).
  • We are an international team: both our members and collaborators are from all over the world.
  • We regularly publish papers at top ML venues, including NeurIPS, ICML, AISTATS, and ICLR.
  • We collaborated with researchers at CMU, Oxford, and UCL. Moreover, we actively collaborated with industries, including NTT communication science laboratory, CyberAgent, Google Brain, Meta AI, and SliceX AI.

Ph.D. students

Please directly apply to the OIST's Ph.D. program. (Starting on May 1st/2023, the pathway program will not be available)

OIST Laboratory rotation students

We regularly accept Laboratory rotation students. Note that we work on developing new machine-learning methods, but we do not work on using machine learning for some specific applications. Thus, to conduct laboratory rotation, it require the knowledge of linear algebra, probability, (convex) optimization, and programming (Python, PyTorch, numpy). If you are familiar with these areas, please contact me. If not, we can consider a machine learning based application based project. However,
I strongly encourage you to first take linear algebra and Python courses and read machine learning papers published at NeurIPS/ICLR/ICML/AISTATS.

Research interns

Please directly apply to the OIST's internship program.
Please write my name in the application if you are interested in doing the OIST internship program under my supervision. Since I have received many inquiries about the internship, I may not be able to respond to all of your requests. So, if you have any questions about the internship program, please directly get in touch with the admission office.

MLDS visiting scholar program 2024 is available (only for M.S. and Ph.D. students)

Researchers (Postdoc, Staff scientist, JSPS or self-funded)

We can also accept JSPS postdoctoral researchers, who already have experience with top-conference papers such as NeurIPS/ICML/ICLR/AISTATS. If you are interested in, please contact us. (mlds (at) oist.jp).
