FY2019 Annual Report

Membranology Unit
Assistant Professor Keiko Kono

Abstract

FY2018 was our second year at OIST. We welcomed one postdoc,  one Ph.D. student, seven rotation students and one intern student. We started many challenging projects including mice, cancer cells and naked mole rat cells.

1. Staff

  • Dr. Yohsuke Moriyama, Science and Technology Associate
  • Dr. Yumiko Masukagami, Postdoc
  • Dr. Shinju Sugiyama, Postdoc
  • Ms. Yuri Matsui, Technician
  • Mr. Hunter Barbee, PhD Student
  • Ms. Sara Abdelaal, PhD Student
  • Ms. Allyson Choi, Research Intern
  • Ms. Hitomi Ohtaki, Research Unit Administrator

2. Collaborations

2.1 Cellular Wound Healing during Beer Brewing

  • Type of collaboration: Joint research
  • Researchers:
    • Dr. Nozomu Kamada, Suntory Global Innovation Center
    • Dr. Fumihiko Omura, Suntory Global Innovation Center

2.2  Mechanisms and Consequences of Plasma Membrane Damage

  • Type of collaboration: Joint research
  • Researchers:
    • Dr. Takeshi Maruyama, TWIns (Waseda U)
    • Dr. Kazuo Takayama, CiRA (Kyoto U)

2.3 Mechanisms and Consequences of Plasma Membrane Damage

  • Type of collaboration: Joint research
  • Researchers:
    • Professor Mamiko Yajima, Brown University

3. Activities and Findings

Using yeast and human normal fibroblasts, we have investigated cellular responses after plasma membrane damage. We have found that plasma membrane damage leads to diverse cellular consequecnes depending on cell types or cellular conditions.
