Abstract

The Fano interference has become an important tool for controlling electromagnetic mode interactions and light propagation at a subwavelength scale, owing to advances in micro- and nanofabrication techniques. In light scattering by plasmonic core-shell nanostructures, the appearance of a Fano line shape is a signature of interference between a localized plasmon resonance at the plasmonic coating and a broad dipole resonance acting as a radiation background. In this context, we study the spontaneous emission of a single-dipole emitter in the vicinity of a plasmonic core-shell nanosphere. We show that the enhancement and suppression of the fluorescence response are associated with plasmonic Fano resonances induced by near- and far-field interactions. In particular, for a single-dipole emitter near a graphene-coated nanowire, the Fano line shape can be tailored and electrically tuned by varying the distance between emitter and cylinder and by modulating the graphene chemical potential. This result could be explored in applications involving ultrahigh-contrast switching for spontaneous emission in specifically designed tunable plasmonic nanostructures.

Looking forward to seeing many of you at the seminar!
