Skill Pill+: Nanoparticles by Design

Skill Pill+: Nanoparticles by Design will introduce concepts related to modeling and designing nanoparticles, directly taught by researchers of the Nanoparticles by Design Unit led by Mukhles Sowwan.

The Nanoparticles by Design Unit is a multinational team working on designing nanoparticles for many applications such as  smart gas sensors, label-free biosensors and hydrogen storage. They use a wide range of advanced techniques to fabricate nanoparticles to specific size, shape, chemical composition, microstructure, and degree of crystallinity in order to optimize desired properties.

Target audience 参加対象者

This Skill Pills+ is suitable people with a background in physics or mathematics, either undergraduate or master students.

第一回のスキル・ピルズ・プラスのテーマに適している参加者は、物理や数学などを学部・修士で学んでいることが望ましいですが、その他の分野の方でも応募可能です。

Teachers 講師陣

The teachers will some members of the Nanoparticles by Design Unit, including Dr. Panagiotis Grammatikopoulos, Dr. Alexander Porkovich and Dr. Zakaria Ziadi.

ナノ粒子技術研究ユニットのメンバーが講師となります。

Program プログラム

The program will take place over two days. On Saturday, the Skill Pill+ will be open to the OIST research community, but Sunday morning will be reserved for the visiting students.

On Saturday morning, we will have a general introduction to nanoparticle science and applications. How do nanoparticles grow? What can we do with them?

On Saturday afternoon, we will learn about molecular dynamics and focus on the particular case of nanoparticle coalescence. We will have a hands-on session where we will simulate the collision of two nanoparticles using the Materials Studio software and the OIST supercomputing resources.

On Sunday morning, we will go to the Nanoparticles by Design laboratory. There, we will have the incredible opportunity to see the MANTIS deposition system in action as the researchers use it to deposit a sample that can be used to build a gas sensor. The produced sample will then be observed and characterized using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and finally it will be tested.
