Select an activity for Tuesday morning

On Tuesday morning participants will be able to select from among three hands-on science activities. Each is targeted to be accessible to students from a variety of backgrounds while giving a taste of work in the specific field. Please keep in mind, this questionnaire is for planning purposes only, and no experience is required in order for you to participate in any of the activities.

Please select your preferred laboratory activity from among the following three labs:

Electronics Activity

Technology is a huge part of daily life, but what are the underlying mechanisms that let electronic devices work? This workshop will first give a brief introduction to the basic building blocks of any analog electronic circuit. With these basic components, an enormous variety of circuits with different purposes can be constructed—we will explore a few common circuits, and show via a hands-on circuit building demonstration how with even just a handful of components very useful circuits can be constructed. To end the workshop, some further examples of circuits in applications will be discussed.

DNA Barcoding Activity

Seafood is a staple of the Japanese diet. You can get food at a store, but are you always eating the right species? Studies around the world have shown that species are often substituted for one another. This is a major problem for conservation, as this allows the consumption of endangered populations. Also, some species can pose greater dangers to human health by containing much higher mercury levels. In this exercise, we'll use DNA barcoding to identify fish species collected from different stores in Okinawa, comparing the genetically determined species with the one on the label.

Superconductivity Activity

Please come and discover the world of quantum levitation! Together with the Theory of Quantum Matter Unit you will levitate super-chilled superconductors and understand how electrons and atoms work together to make quantum mechanics visible and useful.
