Similar to the popular "3 Minute Thesis" event that happened at OIST last year, you will be given the opportunity to present your research in 200 seconds. The event is a great way to get a look at the diversity of the research happening at OIST, and for those who talk, to hone their presentation skills.
"Stirred Bose-Einstein condensates on 1D rings: spectrum and adiabatic excitation" Axel Pérez-Obiol, Kochi University, Japan
Speaker: Dr. Axel Pérez-Obiol, Kochi University of Technology, Japan Abstract: We consider BECs on 1D rings at zero temperature stirred by a link. Their spectrum is theoretically analyzed, consisting in dark and gray solitonic trains, and vortex states comoving with the link. We show how to produce these states by adiabatically stirring the condensate from its ground sate: through specific cycles where the velocity and the strength of the link are gradually tuned. The general properties of the spectrum and cycles are studied through the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a delta-type link and in the comoving frame. A set of specific cycles to excite the BEC are reproduced by simulations of the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii with a rotating Gaussian link. More on arXiv:1907.04574.

Mini Course: Combinatorial Topology - 3 of 3
Algebraic Topology is a classical branch of mathematics. Its origins are combinatorial, based on triangulations of topological spaces. In the later developments major algebraization of the subject has taken place, leading to the introduction of many algebraic invariants as we know them today.
The Mini Course will be taught by Dmitry Feichtner-Kozlov, PI of the Applied Topology Unit. His unit is interested both in developing the formal theory, as well as in applying it outside of the field, for example to Theoretical Distributed Computing.
