Title: Microbial electric communications
Title: Microbial electric communications
Abstract:
Electrons transfer through conductive materials according to potential gradients, and organisms, including microbes,
plants, and animals, use them for energy conservation in intracellular respiratory electron-transfer chains.
Recent findings indicate that some bacteria also transfer electrons across the cell walls toward extracellular electron
acceptors, which is the fundamental for “microbial fuel cells” expected as future green-bioenergy devices. The idea
of “extracellular electron transfer” however has much broader implications in science and engineering, such as those
for microbial communication, bio-engineering (e.g., fermentation, brewing, and biogas production), and bio-computer.
In this seminar, I will introduce our research activities on “microbial fuel cells”, “microbial interspecies communication”,
and “electric syntrophy”, and wish to discuss with scientists from different disciplines on the possibilities for “microbial
electric communications”.
