Skill Pill: Android Development

Skill Pill: Android Development will enlarge your reach to 2 billion devices!

Android, the world’s most widely-installed mobile operating system, runs on more than 2 billion devices. Android’s open nature makes it very accessible for app developers: the tools for making an app are free, and it’s very easy to get started.

Beyond their obvious commercial applications, apps are gaining use in academic and medical settings. The ubiquity of mobile devices makes it possible to study human health and to enable “citizen science” at a large scale.

Nimrod Gileadi, a software engineer at Google, will show you the first steps of app development on this platform. The workshop is designed for those who haven’t done any Android development.

By the end of the Skill Pill, you should have some idea of the work involved in making the apps you use daily, and plenty of resources to go and make your ideas a reality.

Experienced developers are welcome too! Nimrod will be around to help with any issues you have with your existing apps, and to answer your questions about the Android operating system or about programming professionally.

Target audience

This Skill Pill is suitable for people who have some programming experience, but not necessarily with app development.

The teacher will be Nimrod Gileadi.

Using Android Studio, we will build a simple app to demonstrate key concepts in the Android architecture. We will cover:

  • Compiling and running an app on the Android emulator.
  • Designing a user interface in Android Studio.
  • Adding simple logic to the user interface.
