After more than 17 years of teaching at elementary schools in Okinawa, Professor Kano is teaching at Meioh University (Nago, Okinawa) and conducting research in history of education systems in Okinawa (Post-War era).

Summary:

After Japan’s surrender in the Pacific at the end of World War II, Okinawa was under U.S. occupation for 27 years. During this time, education and living conditions in Okinawa were extremely harsh. Furthermore, the added presence of enduring US military bases in Okinawa resulted in many contentious incidents that continued to distress the Okinawan community for many years. During this bleak period, many children had to give up their education in order to survive these rough post-war living conditions. This seminar will delve into how the Okinawan children survived and how the local community was affected by the direct occupation of America during the post war era.
