Prof. Mitsuhiro Yanagida elected to US National Academy of Sciences

OIST professor Mitsuhiro Yanagida was elected a foreign associate of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) for his excellence in original scientific research, the NAS announced on May 1. The NAS is a respected scholarly society with a highly selective election process for members and foreign associates. Prof. Yanagida is one of only three Japanese professors to be elected this year; the election brings the total number of foreign associates worldwide to 430.

Okinawan Food = Long Life?

Okinawans are famous for their longevity. Many reasons have been proposed, one being diet. Dr. Mitsuhiro Yanagida, Principal Investigator at OIST's G0 Cell Unit, proposes that some food compounds - metabolites - found in local Okinawan plants and fruits such as, Ukon (turmeric) and Tankan (a Japanese citrus fruit) likely activate genes found to increase life span. ...read more

G0 Cell Unit work on fission yeast cells in low-glucose may lead to new research into metabolic diseases

The researchers at the G0 Cell Unit, Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology have published an initial research paper (Pluskal et al., FEBS J 2011) describing the growth, proliferation and metabolism of fission yeast cultivated in limited glucose.
