From Tuesday, January 30, to Thursday, February 29, the photo exhibition “Fascination of Science” by the renowned German photographer Herlinde Koelbl will be shown at the OIST Tunnel Gallery.

An opening ceremony for the photo exhibition “Fascination of Science” will take place at 11:00 in the Tunnel Gallery on Tuesday, January 30.

This exhibition by renowned German photographer Herlinde Koelbl features portraits of 41 Nobel Prize Laureates and famous scientists from Japan and abroad as well as an interactive corner for participants to post their own visions. OIST Adjunct Professor Svante Pääbo’s portrait is featured in this exhibition.

At the opening ceremony, remarks will be made by President Markides; as well as Axel Karpenstein, German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the German Centre for Research and Innovation Tokyo (DWIH); and Prof. Till Weber, Honorary Consul of the Federal Republic of Germany in Okinawa. Stefan Speidel, curator of the exhibition, will also be in attendance.

Different definitions of conformal dimension are (essentially) equal, Professor Sylvester Eriksson-Bique, University of Jyväskylä Abstract:

I want to tell you about something that came out of OIST. Last May OIST hosted a work- shop in analysis, random walks and potential theory on metric spaces, which showcased some exciting developments in these areas. I was fortunate to participate, and the topics of the conference prompted discussions with another participant Mathav Murugan, who told about an open problem regarding the conformal dimension of the Sierpinski carpet. The question asks, if different definitions of this notion are equal. Through discussions at the workshop, I solved this question. I will explain the problem, the notions of conformal dimension, and the crucial tool: a new notion of discrete modulus. There are roughly two approaches classically to define discrete modulus, and this new approach lies roughly in between the two — in such a way, that it can benefit from good estimates in both of the worlds. The talk will be fairly mathematical, but I will try to give definitions of the main concepts and some motivation.

2023年7月29日の第1回講演会に引き続きDr. Kana Grace がニューロダイバージェント者の実際の生活体験と当事者としての過去、現在の困難さと対応方法の紹介、また、科学者として、これらの個人的な洞察に科学的情報を加えてお伝えします。オーティズム（自閉症）、ADHD、ディスレクシア、ディスプラクシア、トゥレットというニューロダイバージェンスと、それらと併発する可能性の高い身体的課題であるエーラス・ダンロスやマスト細胞活性症候群などのトピックをお話しします。

Continuing from the first lecture on July 29, 2023, Dr. Kana Grace will reflect personal experiences as neurodivergent individuals and their past and present difficulties and ways of coping with the challenges, and as a scientist, she will will discuss the neurodivergences of Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, and Tourette's, and the physical challenges that are likely to occur such as Ehlers-Danlos and Mast Cell Activity Syndrome.
