Short description:

Effective science communication is necessary in fostering ongoing conversations between scientists, policy makers, and the general public. The ability to communicate clearly and vividly can also help with securing funding, collaborating across disciplines, and strengthening research. The challenge is for scientists to establish a connection with their audience and be clear and engaging without oversimplifying the science. This interactive presentation suggests tools and examples to help scientists communicate in ways that resonate with people outside of their field about what they do and why it matters. The session will cover general principles in how to craft clear and conversational statements, and engage with your audience.

Learning objectives:

By the end of this session participants will be able to...

  • Identify appropriate communication goals and strategize communication methods across settings, purposes, and audiences
  • Learn how to connect to and engage with an audience
  • Explain complex scientific material in terms
appropriate to various audiences
  • Understand the importance of science communication to the field, to your career and to society
