Description

The Topology and Geometry Seminar aims to introduce current mathematical research topics starting from the very basics. We also invite members of other units to talk about the mathematical aspects of their research area. Anyone interested in mathematics is welcome to attend.

This week, Yasha Neiman (Quantum Gravity Unit) will give a guest lecture on "Geometry in real life".

Abstract: Throughout our history, geometry continuously dances between pure math and experimental science. We will perform a romp through its most famous intersections with the latter. The presentation will be aimed at mathematicians, but normal people are very welcome to join in.

Time allowing, we will see the real-world importance of:

  1. Metrics of indefinite signature (spacetime!)
  2. Riemannian geometry (gravity!)
  3. Principal and associated G-bundles (forces!)
  4. The non-trivial 1st homotopy of the orthogonal groups (matter!)
